My 5-year-old son loves it!
I am an English teacher living in Japan.
I have a 5-year-old son who understands spoken English fairly well because I have been speaking to him in English since birth, but because we live in Japan and all his friends are Japanese, he can't form English sentences on his own. I have been trying to teach him through workbooks and DVDs, but while he likes to watch some English DVDs (the Little Leap Alphabet and Learning to Read DVDs helped him a lot with phonics; I highly recommend them!), getting him to do workbook lessons has been difficult. So this is why I decided to try the Rosetta World software.
The jury's still out on whether or not he learns "faster" this way, but he loves doing it, and actually asks me repeatedly (in Japanese) "Can we do our English lesson today?" And while he is shy about speaking English in real life, he will speak up loudly and clearly when doing the "voice recognition" questions.
I also tried it on a 6-year old student of mine, and she loved it, too.
Strengths: Great for children! A fun way for children to learn reading, pronunciation, and simple grammar. They enjoy it; it gets them speaking; and they display more patience than they would with traditional tools because there is the added "fun" of operating a PC. (It's also a great way to introduce children to operating a PC.)
Weaknesses: Since Japanese people study English in jr. & sr. high school, adults may find it too simple (though it's still helpful for pronunciation practice). Long download time: took a total of around 30 mins. for me to download, since I had some trouble getting an update. (My screen froze during the download for some reason.) The voice recognition software is not perfect, so sometimes there are some false "corrects/incorrects"; also, I have to repeat phrases for my child so that he can correct the part that he is saying wrong (the "wrong" part is displayed, but the display is too difficult for young children to understand, and is not always correct.)
Overall, I would say it's an excellent software for parents to do together with their children, for teaching children how to read and speak English from square one, and for helping the parents with their pronunciation at the same time.
